Amithlon

Amithlon was an attempt (and a successful one) to get AmigaOS 3.9 running on cheap and modern x86 hardware.   The goal was to make it feel as much like a real Amiga as possible.  A linux kernel was modified to boot the x86 hardware and launch the Amithlon emulator, which has an advanced JIT 68k emulation at its core.  Amiga-side drivers are capable of accessing the x86 hardware directly, or, using a abstraction layer that supports many underlying cards.  It is also possible to compile x86 native code and run it within AmigaOS 3.9.  The Amiga’s AGA chipset was not directly supported, however hardware-hitting games could still be run through UAE inside the Amithlon emulation.amilogo

The original authors (Mr. Bernie Meyer and Mr. Harald Frank), and the distributor (Haage & Partner) have abandoned the product.  However, over the years there have been several updates to the Amithlon kernel from third-party developers. They are listed below.

But first, you should check out this extensive Installation Guide written by a user named Charlie over at English Amiga Board.  Ok, on to the updated kernels and drivers!

  1. Amithlon.. Great! 🙂

  2. Collect everything concerning Amithlon and stick it in here? Don’t forget about the new kernel4.

  3. Yes that’s the plan. I’ll update it shortly 🙂

  4. No BS and well written, tyvm for the information

  5. Hey would you mind stating which blog platform you’re working with? I’m looking to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a hard time making a decision between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique. P.S Sorry for being off-topic but I had to ask!

  6. Hi, one of the links you’ve provided for Amithlon files & info is no longer active: http://amiga.emugaming.com/press/amithlon.html is a domain currently now for sale. The website may be archived on wayback machine/web archive but it’s no longer ‘live’, just thought you ought to know.

Great site by the way, neat, and very informative. Besides which, I’d expect nothing less of you Darren 😀 , Oh and thanks

  7. Oh, and Harald Frank’s site: http://www.vmc.de/amithlon/index.html has gone the same way as well it seems

  9. Ratte, these are really great news for amithlon community. Radeon openpci driver is absolutely awesome thing to happen. There comes the possibility for other video cards to work on. Looks very interesting for me as well, as i might try myself developing another video card (openpci being the best option for drivers at the moment). Linux, actually kernel, side framebuffer drivers are pretty much exhausted.

I added support (partial h/w acceleration) for Mobility Radeon 9700 (tested) and GeForce PCX 5300, 5750, 5900 (pci express cards, not yet tested). It would be nice if there’s someone with one of those cards to confirm. New kernel and linux sid drivers will be on sourceforge website soon.

my thinkpad t41 is waiting for amithlon 🙂

  11. Subject:- Kernel4

    Hello,
I tried to make a new amithlon CD with the newest kernel.
The problem is the RAM disk hard drive does not work.
This would make it very difficult to format a new SATA HD, with no
way to access HDtoolbox. I also wanted to test the new drivers from
the CD without altering my currently working amithlon system.
Does anyone know what kernel parameters I should supply to
    isolinux.cfg, LILO, GRUB, etc… ?

The only thing I can think of for a SATA system is to use WinUAE to
prepare a real RDB dedicated amiga only HD.

Then you still need to work out what to do with the kernels.

    Regards

  13. Old article but making me wonder why not having a new look at the copy of Amithlon sleeping deep inside a box…
Just an idea : Did someone asked the owner of Amithlon (developpers, H & P) to release it in public domain ?
Does someone have any information about it ?

  14. Hello there,
I know this page has not been updated since a long time but is there anybody using Amithlon today (april 2016) ?
I am wondering if it would run on an Acer Aspire One.
    Thanks for feedback.
