Using a SoundBlaster 128 in AmigaOS 4.x Classic

An enterprising user, TommySammy,  over at A1K.org has a novel way to use a SoundBlaster 128 PCI sound card in AmigaOS 4.1 Classic.  The original post was in German – Thanks to HellCat and Garfield for the English translation!

Guide to install a SB128 Soundcard on OS4 Classic and OS4.1.2 Classic

Requirements:

- Amiga 1200, 3000, or 4000 computer equipped with a Mediator PCI Busboard
- AmigaOS 4.0 Classic or 4.1 Classic
- AHI PPC (included with OS4)
- SB128 Soundcard
- Mixer.lha
SB128ahi.lha

First off,  we route Paula’s signal through the SB128. To do this we need a RCA to 3.5mm jack cable. Then we connect the line-in cables of the CD/DVD drive to the SB128.

Download and extract the two archives from OS4 Depot.

Set the Mixer to start automatically by going into WBStartup Prefs and adding it (AmigaOS 4.1), or dragging it into WBStartup (AmigaOS 4.0). This ensures the Mixer program is started every time you boot your system. A better long-term solution would be adding it to the user-startup script.

Next, copy sb128.audio to DEVS/AHI and SB128 to DEVS/AudioModes.
After that it’s time for a reboot.

Go into AHI Prefs and set the music-unit to “SB128:Hifi 16 BIT Stereo, 48000 Hz” in AHI.

Set Unit 0-3 to “Paula:HIFI 8 Bit Stereo++, 27429 Hz & 4 Channels”.

Set all your audio applications (Tunenet, AmigaAMP, …) and games (WipeOut, …) to “Paula:HIFI 8 Bit Stereo++” as well.

Many software packages were tested an no problems were found.  CD music via LINE works well too.  I assume it’s actually Paula working but the signal getting enhanced in quality.

Another thing to keep in mind: Run the mixer once, set everything up to 100% and save the settings.

That’s it, with this we finally have a decent solution for all those running OS4/OS4.1 and OS3.9 and only wanting to use one soundcard for both systems.
